Mikako Nakagami is a contemporary Japanese ink artist based in Tokyo. She paints inner landscapes inspired by nature through instinctive, rhythmic lines and patterns, grounded in the techniques of abstract and kana calligraphy as well as traditional Japanese ink painting.
Animals, long revered in Japan as divine messengers, inhabit these monochrome worlds. We all live within a world of impermanence and uncertainty, yet animals do not try to analyze or control these things — they simply exist within them. They naturally accept the flow between life and death. That quiet way of being feels deeply beautiful to Nakagami.
They function as mediators between the visible and invisible realms, guiding viewers toward ancient memory and an awareness of what lies beyond sight. Through these works, Nakagami invites a quiet dialogue with the unseen.
墨象や抽象水墨画の技法、仮名書道などをベースに、直感的な線や模様、繊細で透明感のあるにじみといった墨のモノクローム表現を通して、自然から着想を得た心象風景と、そこに生きる動物たちを描いています。
動物たちは、内面の世界と現実の世界をつなぐ媒介者であり、目に見えない大切な何かに気づかせてくれる存在として、作品の中に現れます。
私たちは皆、無常と不確かさに満ちた世界の中に生きています。けれど動物たちは、それらを理解しようとしたり、支配しようとしたりせず、ただ自然にその流れの中に存在しています。生と死のあいだを静かに受け入れながら生きるその姿に、私は尊い美しさを感じます。
作品を通じて、彼らとの静かな対話が生まれることを願っています。
